The South China Morning Post to- day published an article and diagram of a planned shopping centre for the City of Victoria which suggested some revolutionary changes for methods of shopkeeping.

The Director of Public Works has pointed out that the report, appearing recently in one of the vernacular daily papers to the effect that the con tract for building the new Hongkong Government offices has been awarded, is incorrect. A contract for the de- molition of the old Defence Force Headquarters has been awarded. molition work will be started next month. It will not be possible to let a contract for the first section of the new Government offices until Decem- ber at the earliest.

Government has been concerned for some time about the problem of re- settling the thousands of homeless people in the Colony who are often described as "squatters. 19 It is re- vealed that the outlines of a compre- hensive scheme have been approved whereby they will be moved into selected areas where they can occupy simple and hygienie accommodation, at the same time be provided with fire precautions, as well as some rudi- mentary administrative services where they will have rather security of tenure than most of them have enjoyed so far. 21st August

land area of over 300,000 square feet, lies an interesting story of the de- velopment of the Hongkong branch of a world-wide organisation, the Asiatic Petroleum Company. The decision to evacuate these long-established settle- ments by no means indicated any de- sire to curtail the Company's acti vities in Hongkong, declared an official of the A.P.C. On the contrary, the move was a logical outcome of mana- gerial policy. The main distribution of oil would now take place at Kun- tong, on the mainland side of the Harbour, built on a site which had been acquired in 1947 and which had since become one of the most modern oil marketing installations in the Far East.

Accepting the principle of disper- gion of cross-harbour traffic recom- mended by the Harbour Ferry Services Advisory Committee, Government has decided to inaugurate new ferry ser vices. Top priority will be given to two passenger services between Kowloon City and Wanchai, and be tween Kowloon City and Central, Hongkong. The Committee recom. mended against the building of a cross-harbour bridge, but suggested that full consideration be given to the possibility of a cross-harbour tunnel.

Speaking at the Kowloon Rotary Club luncheon yesterday, Rotarian James Chun-wah, BE (Syd.), AMIE (Aust.), AMICE, said that many of the post-war buildings in Hongkong erected by speculators were modern in many respects, but the size and arrangement of the rooms left much to be desired. He predicted that though some of the buildings were fine modern examples, the majority would eventually be inhabited by people of

Hongkong is to spend $40,000,000 on a new water works project in the Tai Lam Chung Valley, New Territories which, on the basis of the Colony's present requirements, should enable a full, uninterrupted, 24-hour water ser vice to be supplied throughout the year. Construction of the main reser- voir which will hold 1,150 million gallons plus the necessary ancillary reservoirs, filters, aquaduet and pipe- lines is expected to take between three and 311⁄2 years to complete.
