chine could at any time be placed on Canal Road East and at the west side of the Canal the Economy Can- teen formed an obstacle. Driving of the bigger portion of the piles had to be done with the pile driver stand- ing on a bridge over the canal. Ob- structions in the canal had to be kept to a minimum as the canal is known to run full bore during heavy rain.

To overcome these difficulties, the contractor supported his pile-driver on 4 timber composite beams, cross- connected to form a bridge. To faci- litate quick movement of the pile- driver in the longitudinal direction of the canal, the bridge was carried on timber runners on both sides of the canal, which were generously greased. With the help of sheave blocks and steel wires, the pile-driver moved sideways with power from its own winch. It was thus possible to complete as many as 6 piles per 8- hour day. When moving the pile- driver the bridge spanned 33 ft. and carried approximately 50 tons. Ап arrangement of vertical supports was

suspended from the bridge. Th:se supports were brought into use dur- ing the driving and extracting of the piling tube, by driving wedges be- tween the underside of the supports and the canal invert, thus reducing the strain on the bridge caused by the piling operations.

The building itself has been de- signed to provide educational, medi- cal and recreational facilities. The overall dimension of the building is 39 feet wide, including the balconies, by 150 feet long.

The ground floor consists of a class room, a committee room, a general office and a separate office for the Welfare Officer. The medical section includes a doctor's consulting room with dispensary attached, and large waiting room for the patients. Ample lavatory and washroom areas, including a number of showers and changing space, complete the ameni ties on this floor.

kitchen, store room, general purpose room, and lavatories occupying the rest of the space. This assembly hall will not only be used for meet- ings, dances and social gatherings, but for cinema shows as well, for which purpose a large projection room has been provided on the mezzanine of the first floor.

The whole roof area over the as- sembly hall has been enclosed in wire mesh and will be used as a basket-ball court and for other re- creational purposes. Part of this area has been roofed over, forming a third floor in which an additional store room and large covered area will provide facilities for various activities.
