At the junction of Sassoon and Victoria Roads, there are some sites for residences which command a view of the China Sea which for beauty and grandeur is difficult to improve upon even in Hong Kong where vistas of land and sea are obtainable from almost any part of the Colony. The ground falls away sharply to the seashore a few hundred feet below these sites, giving a perfect view of

miles of open sea, with Cheung

Chau, Lantao and dozens of lesser

islands presenting an unsui passed picture on a clear day. The steep- ness of Sassoon Road and the fall of Victoria Road isolates the ground and makes possible some excellent plan- ning for residential construction.

Two areas were purchased by the China Provident Loan & Mortgage Co., Ltd., on which they commission- ed Mr. Geo. W. Grey to design a pair of bungalows on one site and a multi- storey residence on the other. The two bungalows on R.B.L.648

erected to serve as company's staff quarters, whilst on the second site the building was erected for Mr. R. O. Huisingh, General Manager of the Holland-China Trading Co., Ltd.

The restricted area of the first site compelled the architect to plan a compact semi-detached arrangement for the two bungalows, but with the two garages set in the centre between the two buildings, which provided the maximum separation and privacy for each. A delightful semi-circular

cantilevered porch provides one of the bungalows with an outdoor exten- sion to the lounge from which can be enjoyed a full unobstructed view of the magnificant seascape. While the general arrangement of each bunga- low is slightly different the accom- modation is the same, the lounge- dining room combination, two bed- rooms each with attached bathroom, a small study and a fair sized kitchen and pantry. In one bungalow, there is a guest lavatory set off the en- trance lobby, whilst in the other, the entrance hall is centralised, separating the lounge and bedroom areas and containing an extra box room.

The multi-storey residence has the main entrance on the Sassoon Road and from this level the building ap- pears to be two storeys in height with
