process of deterioration from which many never recovered.
The biggest problem which the in- dividual had to overcome was the feeling of despair and the inability to engage in useful occupation and it was remarkable to what extent his innate strength of character enabled him to rise above his imme- diate distress. The application of will power, and the exercise of his ability dedicated to practical endea- vour in the service of his fellow sufferers, enabled him to maintain a sense of proportion and a sanity of outlook which carried him through three and a half trying years.
Most of the menial work which had to be done for himself and his fellow beings occupied a certain proportion of his time, but it was the way in which he occupied his leisure hours which really marked his true worth and set him above his fellow crea- tures.
The drawings which we illustrate on these pages were executed by Mr. Henry Tebbutt, a well-known and deeply respected architect of Hong Kong, during his internment in Stanley.
It is a design of a home which may never be built, but it has been delineated with such a wealth of de- tail and with such cheerful and light- hearted feeling as to constitute it a document of the triumph of human spirit over adverse circumstances. The optimism and hope which it symbolises become a portrayal of the strength of civilised humanity over the degrading forces which continual- ly assail it.
We regret that we are unable to publish these drawings in their ori- ginal colours nor to convey more than a conception of the delicacy of touch with which they have been executed Having shared the circumstances which led to their creation, we can appreciate their beauty, and consider ourselves fortunate in having the privilege of reproducing such an out- standing example of craftsmanship achieved in spite of the utmost limi- tations.
