Were this magazine but an ordinary trade publication, this article would never have been included in our pages, but we try to do more than merely describe a building; we try to go into its historical and sociological existence, the reasons for its con- ception and the aims which the build- ers hope to accomplish through its erection.

Further than this we attempt to introduce personalities connected with the project, the people who invest their money in its construction and above all to interpret the spirit and temperament of the architect through his planning and his design.

When the Japanese occupied Hong Kong the life of the European popu- lation was not only completely dis- rupted but their mode of existence, based upon years of the pursuit of the civilised conception of peace and happiness, completely disorganized. They were torn away from business routines that years of habit had set into a pattern of activity and useful- ness, and up-rooted from homes that a protracted period of industry and accomplishment had formed into a setting of comfort and fine living which they had every reason to be- lieve to be one of permanence and
