Elevation of the grand stand section.

Going and returning from the pool the swimmer must pass through a shower and disinfecting foot-bath. The arrangement is such as to permit easy observation and control of the persons using the dressing rooms. Outsiders are prevented from entering the swimming area which is entirely fenced off with a wire-mesh fence. The children's section is also separated from the main pool to prevent accidents.

A group of "cabanas", each with a shower, a dressing room and one patio is strung along the West boundary and these serve at the same time to shut off the view of the under

pool from the neighbouring schoolhouse now

construction.

These cabanas constitute another separate and indepen- dent unit, as the access to them is by the lower road, the Avenida Sidonio Pais. Admittance is through a turnstile gate at the ticket booth and those wishing to swim must also pass through a shower and footbath.

The building in the foreground, along the Avenida Sidonio Pais is a restaurant and dance hall and from its roof the public can have a good view of the swimmers. The front and sides are almost entirely windows and glass blocks and reinforced concrete, and in this structure the architects have again adopted a functional design with very pleasing results as may be seen from the illustrations.

A series of reinforced concrete frames or bents are used to carry the 30 feet wide flat roof which is to be used as an open air esplanade where refreshments and food may be served.

While the restaurant building is of a very modern design, the spectators' stand and the cabanas have tiled roofs which the architects propose to treat after the characteristic Portuguese style. On the whole a very simple architectural treatment has been adopted with reliance chiefly on the good arrangement and landscaping.

The works are to be started soon, but no definite date has been as yet set for completion which is dependent upon deliveries of the pumping and purification plant which are to be shipped from either the U.K. or the U.S.A.

The total cost of the entire scheme is estimated at about HK$1,000,000.

The design is by Messrs. Alfred V. Alvares, Architect, formerly of the Credit Foncier d'Extreme Orient and Jose F. da Silva, (Assoc. M. Inst. C.E.), Civil Engineer, formerly of Messrs. Atkinson & Dallas, Ltd., Shanghai, both authorized architects who have established themselves under the name of Alvares & Silva, Architects & Civil Engineers, Hong Kong.
