THE MACAO MUNICIPAL SWIMMING POOL

The Architects' impression of the new Pool.

Another progressive step in the development of the city of Macao by the Portuguese authorities is the proposed scheme for a Municipal Swimming Pool depicted above for the Leal Senado da Çamara.

It is to be built in the vacant plot between Avenida Sidonio Pais and Estrada da Victoria, next to the existing school for Girls, the site being part of what formerly was the Avenida Vasco da Gama.

The plan of the entire enterprise.

An attempt was made about 15 years ago to build a swimming pool only but construction was abandoned after the walls had been carried up just above the level of the bottom slab.

In the new scheme the Architects decided to retain the parts of the pool already built and by arranging the various structures around it obtained a most pleasing and interesting lay-out as will be seen from the reproduc- tion of the general plan herein shown.

The main feature is the swimming pool itself 50 metres (162 feet) long and 20 metres (65 feet) in width (with provision for eight 7-feet racing lanes), probably the largest in China. The water depth will be 4 feet at the shallow end and 10-4′′ at the deep end where a 3-metre and two 1-metre diving boards are to be installed. It is proposed to adhere as closely as possible to Olympic standards so that official competitions may be held.

Water will be drawn from the Macao Waterworks mains and will be recirculated, filtered, chlorinated, and then returned to the pool via an aerating cascade. The filter house is shown at the upper left of the picture, its front being treated as an arcade to provide shade and shelter for the children using the wading pool.

The latter is a smaller pool, 40 feet long by 20 feet wide, with a water depth varying from 1 foot to 4 feet, and is for use of children and beginners. For the tiny tots there is also a sand pit nearby also 40 feet by 20 feet.

The grandstand is to be entirely of reinforced concrete. In order to allow for stresses resulting from temperature changes the total length has been divided into 3 sections with expansion joints connecting them. Certain parts are to be prefabricated and by careful design of formwork the architects propose to eliminate a great deal of plaster- work and finishing thus effect a saving in the construction costs.

The back of the spectators' stand faces the Estrada da Victoria which is at a level half way between the pool and the top of the stand. The Public entrance is from this road and at this level are the public lobby or "crush hall", lounge, bar, refreshment stalls and lavatories as well as the passages to the seats. At both ends and in the lounge exit doors are provided.

The top of the stand is a covered promenade deck, the central pavilion being allocated to the press and broad- casting, an all-glass booth being designed for this purpose.

The dressing rooms, showers and lavatories are in the lower level, under the stands. One wing is reserved for women and the other for men, and each section is in itself a complete and separate unit with its own stairs, checking and examination counters, dressing booths etc., as well as independent passages to the pool area.
