IGHTEEN entries were submitted

in the open competition for a design for the Great Hall, Theatre and Administration Centre of the University of Malaya in Kuala Lum- pur. Seventeen of the designs enter- ed were from architects practising in Malaya; the eighteenth, which was commended. came from a Malayan architectural student at present study- ing in Melbourne, Australia.

In announcing their awards the - Mr. W. L. Shipley, M.B.E.. A.A.Dip., A.R.I.B.A., and Mr. M. J. Cotton, Dip. Arch., Dip. C.D. (Liverpool), A.R.I.B.A., A.M.T.P.I. said that although the competition posed a most difficult and complex design problem, the response was excellent. Of the de- signs submitted many were based on a good analytical approach to the

problems involved, and considerable skill and imagination was used in providing solutions.

Prize winners and prizes are:

C.H.R. 1st prize (M$7,500): Bailey, of Booty Edwards and Partners.

2nd prize (M$5,000); Robert Davison, of Raglan Squire and Partners.

3rd prize (M$2.500); Chen Voon Foo, Lim Chong Keat and William S.W. Lim. of the Malayan Architect Co-partnership.

Commended: Goh Hock Guan, of Melbourne.

In their report the assessors said they paid particular attention to the following points (given below with their remarks on each points).

The character of the scheme and its architectural quality.

Here is was necessary to retain a character appropriate to University buildings while handling the inter- relation of large volumes.

The use made of the site and the relation of the scheme to the other building complexes on the campus.

In this respect, although there was need for the consideration of economy, it was necessary to produce a design sympathetic to the layout of the university buildings in gen. eral and to the chosen site in parti cular.

The flow and handling of pedes trian and vehicular access within the site and its relationship to the remainder of the campus.

A sensible segregation of these two elements was looked for. The large parking areas involved should have been placed where they would not visually dominate the scheme.

The general workability of the internal planning of the building complex: and the suitability of the
