The building will stand on a site of 15,545 square feet bounded by Des Voeux Road Central, Connaught Road Central, Queen Victoria Street, and David House.
The Bank will occupy the first second and third floors and will have also a penthouse. Total cost of the structure and land will be approx. imately $22 million.
The piling and foundation work, on which good progress is being made, is being carried out by the Vibro Piling Co. Ltd.
The frame of the building will be entirely of welded steel supplied by Dorman Long (B & E) Ltd.
In keeping with the planners' emphasis on service there will be a postal box on the ground floor, and conveniently placed on each floor a Lamson letter chute to the box.
Otis Autotronic lifts will be in- stalled. With a maximum speed of 700 ft. per minute they will cater for rush, off-peak, and light traffic automatically as conditions require.
The whole building will be air- conditioned, with plant located in the basement.
It is expected that work on the foundations will be completed by November next, and that the Bank will have been erected by June 1962.
Professor Sean Mackey. Professor of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong, is consulting engineer.
When the new headquarters have been opened the present headquar- ters in Queen's Road Central will be used as a branch.
The Bank already has a Kowloon Branch and proposes to erect a second branch there.
