to complete. However, good progress was possible there- after, owing to the fact that roof was reached just before the rains set in June and July. The whole operation took only 10 months to complete, that is from November 1948

to September 1949.

Many novel methods and materials were used in the building with success, the most outstanding of which

Coloured asphalt floor tiles to match colour of walls,

Crittall Pressed steel doors of single and double leaves,

Hyspecon walling method for partitioning, Sprayed-on waterproof distemper both inside and

out.

In view of the high cost of red bricks just now, the Hyspecon walling method would probably provide special interest, as the cost of partitioning was reduced to only about 1/3 that of ordinary brick partitioning. The University test results on the mixture show the following figures:

The building is served by a Schindler standard hospital bed lift and a press-buttoned food lift. There are fire- escape ladders one for each wing. Owing to the presence of A.R.P. tunnels right underneath the building, the founda- tions were unusually heavy, and alone took three months
