Peak Pavilions—Repairs at the end of the maintenance period are now completed. Estimate of cost of adjustments to inetal windows is being obtained.
Queen's Garden Flats Several minor repairs have been carried out. Work is now in hand to erect shelving in box- rooms, ventilators to dry-rooms and lift machine rooms.
King's Park Fluts-Work has progressed favourably during the period and it is anticipated that the buildings will be ready for occupation at the end of October,
Mount Nicholson Bungalows-A scheme for additional servants' quarters has been forwarded for consideration.
Garden Apartments in Kowloon Tong-The scheme has been referred to the Joint Housing Committee.
Government Offices & Workshops-The erection of the Furniture Workshop is now completed, and the Controlier of Stores is in occupation. The building to house the Offices for Health Authorities in Shamshuipo is now completed and occupied.
Police Stations Contracts were signed and work com- menced during August for Bayview and Hunghom Ponce Stations.
Tenders for the Police Block Houses in the New Territories are due on the first week of October, whust a Gazette notifica- tion calling for tenders for the Kowloon City Police Station was published on 30th September.
Progress on the Shaukiwan Police Station is behind schedule owing to a high percentage of rock in the excavation.
Working drawings for the Asiatic Married Police Quarters are proceeding; specification for site clearance has been pre- pared with a view to letting a contract at an early date.
Schools Working drawings for Gap Road School are proceeding.
The Workers School on Hennessy Road is occupied and authority has been requested to carry out certain alterations to the adjoining Salvation Hall.
Classrooms and Assembly Hall of the Kowloon Docks Memorial School were handed over to the Director of Educa- tion on 13th and 28th September respectively-one week ahead of the Contract completion date. Authority has been requested to carry out certain additional work including levelling the playing field, and instructions are awaited.
The Metropolitan Construction Co. commenced site levelling on the temporary La Salle College in July. Drawings of timber hut were issued to the General Contractors, Lun Sang & Co., Ltd., on 8th August and work on fabrication com- menced. Concreting of floor slab to Block I was commenced on 11th August and the work has proceeded as quickly and smoothly as conditions permitted. A survey of the site for boarding accommodation has been made and preliminary plans for approval and for estimating purposes are in course of preparation.
Miscellaneous The Repulse Bay Development was put out to tender in September, and the report on tenders is now being prepared for the Tender Board. Sketch plans for the Kennedy Town Abattoir are still in course of preparation. Work on Registration Scheme Laboratory is now completed. New plans were prepared and site levelling commenced for the H.K.D.F. New Training Huts. Drawings are being traced and specifications prepared for Marine Licensing Station,
CROWN LANDS & SURVEY OFFICE
During the period under review, 49 applications were received for the purchase of Crown Land, including extensions to existing lots, exchanges, grants, etc., 9 lots amounting to $513,400.00 were sold by public auction and 5 lots realising $129,460.00 were sold by private treaty. Extension of time for completion of building covenants was granted on 17 lots, fines being imposed in 16 cases. 132 permits were issued for temporary leasing of Crown Land, the total annual fet amounting to $31,651.00. Extensions were granted to 3 lots, whilst new Crown leases were granted in respect of 4 lots.
125 Domestic permits were issued for 110 European type houses, 196 Chinese type houses, staff quarters, 1 sub-station, 2 hotels, 1 additional story at 1 Fei Loong Terrace, Telephone Exchange Building at Leighton Hill Road and 1 additional building at No. 32 Cumberland Road. In addition 28 occupa- tion permits were issued for non-domestic buildings, which included 4 factories, 1 godown, 11 stores, 1 office and workshop, 1 temporary office building, 1 substation building, 1 garage, basement ground 1st and 2nd floors of Telephone Exchange Building on Leighton Hill Road, and others.
45 dangerous buildings notices were served affecting 63 houses; 62 notices affecting 76 houses were served under Section 104 & 126 of the Buildings Ordinance 1935, 71 notices affecting illegal structures with 4 prosecutions, and 46 inspections and reports in regard to structural stability of premises to be licensed by other Departments. There were 3 emergency shorings, 6 collapses causing 10 casualties, 1 fire and 1 landslide which had to be attended to by this department. 169 tests and inspections of drainage system to various districts were also carried out.
DRAINAGE OFFICE
Works executed on private account included 20 sewer and/or stormwater connections on the Island during August and September, while on the Mainland the figures were 23 and 10 respectively. One nullah intake was constructed on the Island. In addition, Government sewere were extended by 219 ft. on the Island and 599 ft. on the Mainland, the cost being charged to private accounts.
In respect of works contingent on land sales, Government sewers and nullahs were extended by 380 ft. and 25 ft. respectively on the Island, whilst on the Mainland 555 ft. of sewers and 1130 ft. of stormwater drains were extended.
Work on the raising of the nullah walls between Cause- way Road and Tunglowan Road was completed over a length of 794 ft.
Work on the excavation for the second section of the Fo Pang Valley has been put in hand.
In addition to the above, general maintenance work progressed satisfactorily during the period. The clearing of sewers, stormwater drains, nullahs and channels, totalling 1192 chokes, was carried out by direct labour. In addition, 88 repairs to sewers and S.W.D. and 3 replacements of covers, gratings, traps, etc., were carried out by contract labour. Rehabilitation of sewers in Lai On Lane, Water Street, Third Street, Kowloon City Road and Lion Rock Road were put in hand.
PORT WORKS OFFICE
In addition to the guniting, and preservation of the concrete sub-structure work continuing on Jubilee Street Ferry Pier and the painting and other work on Jordan Road Pier, routine repair work to fendering and decking etc. was carried out to a large number of piers and seawalls in both Hong Kong and Kowloon. Modifications to Tonnochy Road Public Pier for use as temporary ferry pier was also being carried out.
A small building on the Arsenal Yard waterfront was completed as an Automatic Tide Gauge Station and the equip- ment installed and put into operatica.
Under favourable tide conditions, current observations were carried out off Tsin Sha Tsui, Holt's Wharf's Hong Kong & Whampoa Dock, North Point Quay Wall, Wanchai Praya and Jubilee Street Pier.
