The unusual conception of the bal-

cony arrangement on the Hysan Avenue facade has given the building a bold dynamic touch in the modelling, a feeling of scale, and a vivid play of light and shade. The shape of the balconies was inspired principally by

the dictates of function. The design problem was to have the sitting space placed on one side so as to provide maximum verandah space free from opened windows and yet which would be accessible to through drafts.

The main staircase and the servants' stairway are placed contiguous to the lift in such a manner as to minimise waste areas and assist the logical grouping of service rooms.

A technical detail which should be of interest is the fact that only one wireless aerial is provided for the whole building. This has been erected by the owner and is a Marconi in- stallation which provides screened reception to an outlet in each flat.
