Interior of St. Ignatius's Church, looking toward the altar.
The church has, therefore, in effect hip roofs on three levels the main roof over the church hall, the higher roof over the clerestory and, finally, the pyramidal steeple. This was done because the square plan adopted seemed to call for the repetition of another square at a higher level to form a clerestory.
The rest of the plan was develop- ed by placing a series of beams. converging from the perimeter of the building on to a ring beam over the high altar. The base of the steeple is louvered, housing a set of three bells which are operated by electronic remote control.
Designed for a congregation of 600 people, the church also has a chapel accommodating 50 people at the rear. One planning require- ment was the provision of wide overhanging eaves covering the aprons on both sides of the church to provide for an overflow of churchgoers on specially crowded days. This again reinforces the square appearance of the building.
Cost of the church excluding furnishings and the bells, was ap- proximately $M160,000.
