placed as necessary within the building interior. L&N claim that this type of building is more rigid than a traditional framework structure and has proved more stable against seismic forces.

In principle the 15 cm. thick load bearing concrete cross walls are not reinforced, though reinforcement is used around door openings in other wall panels. Holes and openings are provided for in all elements including cast-in, prepainted frames for doors and windows. In Europe, plastic tubes for electrical wiring and boxes for switches are also cast in the panel. Partition wall units are 6 cm. thick

concrete.

The facade components have steel

window frames cast in. As a decorative external feature they incorporate rec- tangular panels of exposed aggregate. A retarder is used and the surface con- crete is simply washed-off after the slabs are removed from the moulds. Neither the facade nor wall panels are plastered, the finish obtained from the steel moulds being smooth enough to permit direct painting on site.

After demoulding, the precast com- ponents are carried by overhead crane to the stacking yard to await transpor- tation to the construction site at Jalan Pekililing. Eight overhead travelling cranes, each of 6 tons lifting capacity, serve the halls and stockyards.

Two types of road carrier are em-

ployed: one is a specially designed A-frame tractor-trailer for transporting wall panels in a vertical position; the other is a flat-top lorry to carry the ribbed floor slabs which are delivered to the site in a horizontal position The A-frame vehicle has an overall length of 44 ft. 5 in. and is able to carry a maximum payload of 12 tons, while the flat-top lorry has a platform body 7 ft. wide and 21 ft. long and can carry a maximum payload of 10

tons.

At the construction site the com- ponents are taken direct from the transporter to their position in the
