be purchased by Government and thus reduce the Authority's capital invest- ment by this amount.

The total cost of this estate will be about fifty million dollars.

At So Uk, the site formation work began early this year. Some delay was caused because of bad weather. Excavation for the foundations of retaining walls and for the extension of Po On Road continues, and also filling of the depression in the south- east corner (where the Cheung Fat Street extension will eventually stand). By the end of June over 48,000 cu. yds. of earth and 8,000 cu.yds. of rock had been excavated.

By the end of September, approxi- mately half of the earth and rock excavation had been completed, and excavation of the foundations of the retaining walls and reduction of the site to level for construction of roads continues. Some retaining walls have. been finished. According to present indications, all this part of the work should be completed by April 1953. It may be of interest to know that the major part of the cost of preparing the site for this project is being made from Colonial Development And Wel- fare Funds.

19 huts, containing 222 persons, were removed from the site by the Resettlement Department on 23rd April; another 60 huts, containing 800 or still remain, to be persons were, cleared.

Mr. W. Szeto, who is designing a flushing supply for the estate, has concluded that there is no alternative to using sea water. An intake and pumping plant must therefore be con- structed near the sea-wall at Cheung Sha Wan, where the reclamation is now in progress, with a delivery pipe along Hing Wah Street into the site.
