has been taken of these ground con- tours to provide access from both the upper and lower levels.
The main classroom block is placed along Wood Road, which is the long side of the oblong-shaped site. In this way the classrooms are removed from the noise of busy Queen's Road East.
A second block, housing the hall, three special rooms, caretaker's quar- ters and car park, is set at a right angle to the main block and along the right of way on the north side of the site. The possibility of placing this block along Queen's Road East was ruled
out early in the design process as it would then have been close to the noise and would have needed to sup- port Queen's Road East, allowing no ventilation for the lower two floors and entailing costly structural work.
The most difficult phase of con- struction was building the two end bays of the main block which are at the junction of Wood Road and Queen's Road East. Due to the large difference in levels between the footing and Queen's Road East, considerable shor- ing was required. Subsequently, the construction of the two bays was left to the time when the main block was built up to above Queen's Road East's level so that the shoring could be sup- ported by the concrete frame of the building.

The hall block contains a variety of functions and is architecturally treat- ed with a standard grid of horizontal fair-face concrete sun breakers span- ning between columns to give a unity to the whole. The triangulated roof over the hall is expressed externally by a deep overhang.
