and canopy lighting, floodlighting tow- ers are installed on the wharf be- tween and beyond the sheds. Flush plug boxes are provided for future sup- ply to rail mounted wharf cranes, and as welding points for repairs on ships. Telephone connections for ships use also are installed on the wharves.

Water supply

Water storage is in a 125,000 gallon overhead tank and a 100,000 gallon ground level tank fed from P.W.D. mains. Distribution is by 8 in. diame- ter asbestos cement and steel mains, and ships' watering points are provided at frequent intervals at the berths. Fire hydrants are installed throughout the site.

Fenders

An interesting detail worth noting is the fender system installed to protect the wharf face and corners from the buffeting and ramming of hulls of ships. Massive hollow cylinders of vul- canized rubber are strung up by heavy chains down the whole length of the concrete wharf face for this purpose.

The corners of the wharf at the north and south ends are fitted with Firestone Burleigh fenders or revolving buffers. These are in effect a pair of giant tractor tyred wheels which are mounted vertically to roll freely against ship's hulls under impact.
