supported on pile beams over pres- tressed spun concrete piles, the bays being at 15 ft. spacing generally and the piles varying in length from 90 to 140 ft.

Access bridges consist of prestressed concrete beams simply supported on pile beams with an insitu deck. The level of the wharf deck is 5 ft. above the highest tide level and the deck load- ing capacity is 6 cwt. per sq. ft.

A section of the wharves is shown in Fig.2. Each berth is provided with two types of cast steel bollards ten of 50-ton size and four of 15-ton size.

Prestressed concrete piles

A project of this nature depends on extensive piling and a new type of con- crete pile system developed by Ed. Zublin A.G. of Duisburg, West Ger- many, and successfully used in Ran- goon and Lome, was contracted for.

The piles are hollow and cylindrical in shape having an O.D. of nearly 27 in. (68 cm) with a maximum length of up to 138 ft. They were built in a special plant assembled at site in 1966.

The pile, capable of supporting a load of 270 tons, is reinforced with a helical mild steel cage welded to mild steel longitudinal bars on a machine.

The mild steel cage is threaded by

22 longitudinal prestressing wires and placed in the lower half of a split steel cylindrical mould of appropriate length. The whole assembly is transported by crane to a long spinning bench where steel end plates are bolted to the mould after passing the stressing wires through holes in the plates. The lower mould is filled with the appropriate quantity of concrete and the upper half of the mould is bolted to the lower section and end plates before stressing the 22 wires hydraulically.

The mould and its contents are rotated for half an hour at 270 revolu- tions per minute thus evenly distribut- ing the concrete in the mould and com- pacting it by centrifugal force during the initial setting stage. The pile is re- moved from the mould after 24 hours and stacked in the storage yard where it is kept wet until it matures in 10 days.

Most of the buildings, with the ex- ception of the administrative offices, are all-steel prefabricated types, which
