Sports centre for Hong Kong Island

An area of 9.7 acres opposite Victoria Park, Causeway Bay is to be developed as the first sports centre in Hong Kong. Detailed proposals for the area, formerly military lands, have been agreed by the Recreation and Amenities Select Committee.

Feature of the proposals will be a velodrome - a concrete-surfaced banked track for cyclists with an all-weather or turfed surface in the centre - measuring some 500 ft. by 320 ft. This will be used for a variety of sports ranging from mini-soccer to cycle-polo. A cantilevered stand for about 1,000 spectators will be built there.

On an adjacent site will be a two-storey multi- purpose training centre, measuring 150 ft. by 100 ft. The ground floor will have activity rooms for table tennis, fencing, judo, weight-lifting and body building, archery and boxing, as well as lecture rooms, changing rooms and ancillary facilities. The upper floors will consist of a multi-purpose games room measuring some 120 ft. by 100 ft., for basketball, badminton, etc.

Ventilation contractors to register

-

A Bill providing for the registration and control of ventilation contractors the Building (Amend- ment) Bill, 1971 – has been published by the Hong Kong Government. The bill also aims at ensuring that ventilating systems in buildings are inspected regularly.

At present these inspections are being carried out under the authori- ty of the Director of Fire Services, the Urban Coun- cil and the Director of Urban Services.
