of Port Shelter on the south side, with the film studio behind. The terrair consists of near 30-degree slopes and the site has been cut into half, with difference of levels of some 20 ft. a one point between the two part which are separated by a vertical drop In general terms the architects were - asked to provide a monumental type of structure which would reflect the dignity and magnitude of the organiza tion behind the scheme. But more particular requirements were difficult to collate, and in order to formulate a detailed brief for the project the archi tects accompanied Mr. Shaw on hi routine of activities in order to asses the living and entertainment needs.

The basic proposal remained, i.e. a place of entertainment, and this ha been amplified by the distinct grouping of the service elements and the served areas. All services such as kitchens lavatories and servants quarters are treated as cores in between the served areas such as the living/dining room! and bedrooms.

At the same time these cores act the main vertical structural supports In this way the structure is an expres sion of the planned relationship be tween the service area and the areas tc be served.

Split levels

The complete project includes a house area of 8,366 sq.ft., a cinema area of 2,848 sq.ft., a 2,728 sq.ft. scenery storage area, and 12,000 sq.ft. for the carport, swimming pool and other garden areas.
