between the columns at each floor level forms the standard classroom of 562 sq. ft. for a maximum of 45 students. Direct lighting and cross ventilation of classrooms is provided: this is illustrated in the cross section.
By an extension of the floor beams the service corridors are cantilevered 8 ft. over the internal well.
This cantilevering obviates the need for extra columns around the court and allows space for the three para- bolic arches which, with their beam connection and the play area above, form an entirely free-standing struc-
ture.
The three arches are separated from the rest of the building by expansion joints. Cast in situ, they are supported by six 1 in. reinforc ing bars at each pivot.
A rich concrete mix of 1:1:2 was used for the arches in conjunc- tion with eight 14 in. reinforcing bars in each, with in. binders. In the tie
