Difusol applied by gun
PRESERVER
Paste Stops Insect and Fungal Attack
DIFUSOL. a new paste wood pre- server suitable for the treatment of in-situ timbers has been introduced by Cuprinol, Ltd., Grosvenor Gar- dens, London, S.W.1.
An oil borne preserver in the form of a smooth white emulsion, it will eradicate wood boring insect infesta- tions, and preserve the timber from future insect and fungal attack. It is supplied in plastic lined fibre drums ready to use and is easily applied in a one-operation treatment as an over- all coating. or in bands which adhere to the timber. For an overall coat- ing, either a coarse brush, trowel or palette knife can be used, or for ap- plication as ribbons, Difusol is best extruded from a gun.
The material will adhere to the timber in a band or layer up to lin. thick, which decreases in size as the oil slowly penetrates into the wood.
The layer or band of paste acts as a reservoir from which the oil borne preservative is liberated by slow con- trolled breakdown of the emulsion in contact with the timber.

The pre- then diffuses deeply and spreads in the timber. The special emulsifying agents allow the break- down to be slow, and cause a thin skin to be formed on the outside of the paste which prevents too rapid breakdown and flooding of the oil.
MAGNIFIER
Aid to Photogrammetric Measurement
PHOTOGRAMmetric measurements can be taken from aerial photographs with a pocket-sized measuring magni- fier, the type SB 160.
SB 160 measuring magnifier
The magnifier has a white plastic body, 2 in. high by 2 in. diameter, and is said to give the maximum illumination over the field of view. Magnification is 5x, and the field lens carries a 180-degree protractor scale and linear scales calibrated in 0.1 mm. and 0.001 ft. increments.

SPREADER
Machine Gives Uniform Mortar Thickness
A MACHINE which spreads mortar to a uniform thickness on bricks and building blocks has been developed by Sapat Patent Holdings (Proprie- tary), 39 Terminus Street, East Lon- don, Cape Province, South Africa.
The equipment includes a hopper which carries the mortar, a single guide rail which traverses the wall and a jolting mechanism for spread- ing an even layer.
The man who is building the wall operates the machine. He draws it along the top of the wall and places the next layer of bricks on top of the mortar. He then draws the machine back in readiness for the next layer.
SPRAYED ALUMINIUM
Process Said to Equal Anodising
SPRAY-COLOURING aluminium by a new process gives the metal a satin finish which is claimed to be as dur- able as anodising.
The spraying is carried out either at the manufacturing plant or on site. Cutting or
drilling of the surfaces does not cause lifting at the edges and an area damaged during erec- tion can be touched up on site.
The coating can also be applied to brass, copper, bronze and other non- ferrous metals. It is said to be un- affected by cement mortar, salt spray, acids, alkalis or ultra-violet rays.
PGH Alumium Sales Pty., Ltd., 94 Fairfield Street, Fairfield, New South Wales, market the coating. The manufacturers are Alumidise Pty... Ltd., Sydney.
H SECTIONS Extra Large Size for Building Construction
DEVELOPMENT and marketing of a new range of large size welded H sections in sizes with web measure- ments up to 1,600 mm, is announced by Japan Steel Tubes Co., Ltd., Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo.
Before now rolled H sections have not been available in a wide range of the larger sizes because of the limitations of web measurements. The new sections are being produced
Far East Architect & Builder January, 1965
to meet the increasing demand for larger sizes in building construction.
They can be manufactured with web measurements of any size between 60 mm and 1,600 mm, with

lengths of any size between 8 m and
18 m.
They can also be made with com- paratively thin webs and with differ- ent types of steel in the webs and flanges. Three types of steel used: SS41, SM50A and Hicon 36.
STAINLESS STEEL
Book for Architects Reprinted
are
THE first edition of "Stainless Steel in Architecture" a book produced last year by Firth-Vickers Stainless Steels, Ltd., Sheffield, UK has now been reprinted and is available for architects and engineers.
-
Well illustrated, the book shows the many ways in which stainless steel can be applied to building work of all kinds. It also includes full technical specifications of the various stainless steels available, their proper- ties and applications.
A further section deals with the maintenance of stainless steel and the book concludes with a directory of suppliers and fabricators.
TERMITE TREATMENT
Leaflet Shows What to Specify
A LEAFLET on termite control from Rentokil Laboratories, Ltd.. East Grinstead, UK, deals with termites and their world geographical distri- tion. Photographs illustrate the characteristic damage of subter- ranean and dry wood termites.
а
Technical information on protec- tion and eradication is given in section entitled Specification which details the form in which architects should specify treatment works.
The specification for the protec- tion of timbers against dry wood termites is also suitable for other groups of wood-boring insects such as Bostrichidae, and Lyctidae.
