NEW
CUTTING TOOL
Blade for use on Laminates
A KNIFE blade for cutting Formica and other decorative laminated plas- tics has been perfected by Stanley Tools (GB), Ltd., Sheffield, UK.
Double ended, the new blade fits the Stanley trimming knife

eral purpose tool with a variety of blades for cutting other materials.
It is used in a similar way to а glass cutter. Two or three scores are made towards the operator, using a straight edge if a straight line is re- quired, and the sheet is then bent up- wards to give a clean break.

meter bays and car parks. The mak- ers. AKN (Road Markings), Ltd., 299 Gray's Inn Road, London, W.C.I, are seeking distributors in the Far East.
The strip projects slightly above the road or car park surface when laid, It is made from Butyrate ma- terial which retains a white brilliance and is resistant to extreme tempera- tures.

The process is said also to result in concrete that is stronger after hardening and is less subject to volume changes by drying and wet- ting.
NN has the following characteris- tics: state white milky emulsion; specific gravity about 1; size of granule 1-3 microns: viscosity 4-6 centi-poises; stability claimed to be good after two months.
The photographs show the results of tests carried out with two concrete blocks which were placed in a 3 cm. depth of water for 24 hours. An ordinary block showed a wetting height of 15 cm., while one with 3 per cent. NN had a wetting height of 2 cm.

Laying can be carried out by skilled labour. A hot-setting mastic is applied to the surface, the strip is firmly pressed home and is then pin- ned down. Traffic may pass over the strip immediately after laying. For concrete surfaces a primer must be brushed
creasingly used before applying the mastic and holes must be pre-drilled.

WATERPROOF CEMENT
Admixture used in concrete blocks
ONODA Cement Co., Ltd., Tokyo, Japan, have evolved a waterproofing method which is now being applied to concrete blocks manufactured by their subsidiary, Oncda Block Co., Ltd.
A stable emulsion, Onoda NN, is added to the mix. NN is an oil-in- water type additive with synthetic surface active agents. The emulsion state is kept unbroken during mixing
No NN (wetting height 15cm)
3 per cent NN (wetting height 2am) and casting, the mix being given more plasticity and air entraining properties.
During curing, by steam or air, the emulsion may be broken; the water in it hydrates the Portland cement into the hardened concrete and the solid substance coats the inner surfaces of air voids and capillaries.
These coatings repel water and stop it from penetrating into the voids.

BECAUSE of its sound absorption properties, as well as its fire resis- tance, sprayed asbestos is being in- in

Spraying Limpet asbestos
where lighter structural members make sound insulation by "mass” im- practicable.
A process developed by J. W. Ro- berts, Ltd., Bolton, UK, sprays blend- ed asbestos fibres and an inorganic binder, together with finely atomised water, directly on to the surface to be insulated. The coating, which dries out naturally, forms a jointless cover- ing over any shape. It can be de- corated in various coloured finishes.
On concrete floors a 6in. thickness of concrete would be needed in order to achieve a four hour fire rating. An equivalent rating can be achieved by a 3 in. thick concrete floor protect- ed by in. of sprayed Limpet asbestos a saving in deadweight of over ! ton per 100 sq. ft.
The material also has advantages where condensation is a problem. vapour which condenses Moisture within the coating is drawn back to the exposed surface by the strong "wicking" action of the individual fibres and re-evaporated to atmos- phere. This is a continuous action which prevents the formation of droplets at the outer surface.
Agents for Limpet are: Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock Co., Ltd., Kow- loon Docks.
