Its establishment enables the pre- apprenticeship and other lower-level courses at the Technical College to be moved to the institute, thus freeing facilities at the college for the training of higher level technicians.
Training
The technical institute, which be- came operational in September 1970 has been built in recognition of the ur gent need in Hong Kong to provide more accommodation and facilities for the training of technologists, techni- cians and craftsmen.
The new institute offers accom- modation for the theoretical and prac tical training of pre-apprentices, ap- prentices, craftsmen, technicians and vocational instructors on full-time, block-release, part-time day-release and evening courses in commercial, mechanical and production, electrical and building trades.

The courses are geared to meet the present demands in industry and also aim to supply instructors for future technical schools. The institute is ad- ministered through six departments business studies, construction, elec- trical engineering, mechanical engine- ering, preliminary and general studies as well as technical teacher and work- shop instructor training - each with its own head.
In view of impending metrication in many parts of the world, students at the institute are training in both sys- tems and many of the machine tools and equipment are dually calibrated.
