Two main features of the D series are its tilted engine and tilting cab. Fixed at an angle of 45 deg. beneath the seats, the engine barely intrudes into the cab and allows a free walk- through for the driver: for ease of servicing the injection pump. fuel filters, etc., are mounted on the upper face. Maintenance is also facilitated by the cab which can be tilted for- ward through 45 deg. by operating a quick-release mechanism inside the cab, and then releasing an exterior safety catch.

native, the driver's seat is fully ad- justable, heater, demister, and full- width sun visors are provided, and a binnacle includes an ammeter and oil- pressure gauge, as well as standard instruments. A printed circuit is used instead of instrument wiring and the electrical system is fully fused.

cu. in. type (used on the D750 and D700) and 240 cu. in. with four cylinders: at 2,800 r.p.m. they develop 128, 115 and 83 h.h.p. respectively. Two "over- square" petrol en- gines for the D series have the same external dimensions as the diesels, but capaci- ties are 240 and 300 cu.in. Respec- tive gross outputs at 3,800 r.p.m. are series are a six- cylinder 360-cu.in.

Sheepsfoot Interchangeable with Smooth Roll
THE Model VF-64T vibrating sheepsfoot roller, a medium width unit equivalent to a 5 x 5 static roll- er in size but with many times its compactive force, has been added to the Essick line of contractors' plant.
This 64 in. wide model is a dual- purpose unit; the sheepsfoot can be changed on site for a smooth face roll.
Powered either by an air cooled 37 h.p. diesel, or a 33 h.p. petrol en- gine, the VF-64T develops a vibra- tional impact of 25,750 lb. at 2,100 v.p.m. and provides 450 tons per second of compaction energy. Hitches are available so that triplex. parallel or tandem hook-up groupings can be made to achieve greater cover-

TUNNEL MACHINE Largest Shield Type Excavator Built in Japan
THE world's largest shield type tun- nel excavating machine has recently been completed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. at the Akashi plant of Kobe Shipyard and Engine Works.
It has been built for Kumagi-gumi Construction Co., Ltd. and will be

used for the construction of subways in Osaka. Able to excavate a double track tunnel, the excavator has an outer diameter of 10.32 meters, an overall length of 8.3 metres and a steel thickness at the tail part of 80 mm. It is equipped with 35 shield jacks, each having a 250 ton capacity and weighs about 400 tons.
The shield type machine can dig a tunnel without affecting the surface of the earth and is particularly suitable for tunnel construction when the ground is soft or under a build- ing.
In April this year. Mitsubishi suc- ceeded in developing a new tunnel excavator with cutters powered by hydraulic motors, instead of the con- ventional manual excavation type.
