A height of approximately 20 ft. has been provided in this area to en- sure good light and ventilation. Where these are not affected a mezzanine floor has been inserted for the department store, etc.

Due to the profile of the terrain it has been possible to form two more floors below the ground floor level, of a much smaller area and compara- tively long and narrow. A bowling alley with milk bar, or similar indoor recreational facilities will be provided here, and below a youth centre or boys and girls' club. covering about 5,000 sq. ft. plus living accommoda- tion, can be made available. These recreational facilities adjoin areas of play space in the adjacent residential blocks, at the same level.

Clock Tower

A clock tower is to be incorporated at the north west corner of the cen- tre. It will be of skeleton framing. 60 ft. high, and will be surrounded by small restful area with seats. shrubs and flowers.

Space is also allocated on the podium, at a meeting point of the two main axes, for a piece of sculpture. About this the Authority states: "For a fraction of the capital expenditure of its schemes, sculpture and other ap- plied arts can be employed not only to enhance the appearance of the estate but to encourage local talent in the visual and applied arts. This piece of sculpture may be the first item to be considered and provided in this way."

Large areas of the complex will be available for pedestrian circulation and sitting out. This amounts, in the town centre itself and not including similar facilities in and around ad-
