the northern side where a bus ter- minus is planned. This podium is linked by a footbridge on the western side to a terrace on which are sited clinics, a maternity home with about 20 beds, banks and shops, all on the same level, in the lower floors of a residential block.
In the centre is a two-storey build- ing with 15 shops and a three-storey department store of 20,000 sq. ft. The department store appears as a single-storey unit above the podium, and two storeys below.
A large restaurant occupies the whole of the upper floor over the shops, and a community hall is locat- ed over the department store. The restaurant and community hall can be combined into one unit for hiring for large functions. At the south western corner is a post office on three floors, with sorting and delivery facilities.
Car Park
Direct access to a three-storey car park is obtained from the podium level. The Authority is studying the function and operation of car parks generally on its estates; it believes that a car park in this location is a necessity for the town centre in addi- tion to any consideration of the normal use of the tenants.
