N ambitious plan to create a na- tional cultural centre оп 21 hectares of reclaimed land projecting into Manila Bay has been launched in the Philippines,

Promoted by Government and to be supported by funds raised through donations, the centre will house the seven arts

The theatre will be set back about 130 metres from Roxas Boulevard. Vehicular ramps will sweep above re- flecting pools to the lobby level.

Multi-purpose Auditorium

Fully air-conditioned, the theatre will contain a main multi-purpose au- ditorium for opera, ballet and sym- phony performances, with a seating capacity of 2.000; a small experimen- tal theatre in the basement for drama, chamber music and lectures with seating for 530: a restaurant and bar

The auditorium is divided into four levels: orchestra, box section, gallery and upper gallery. Escalators will provide the circulation link between the different levels.

The museum and art gallery com- plex will be surrounded by high walls to form a quiet, self-contained area of gardens and fountains. It is compos- ed of four pavilions linked by a sys- tem of open courtyards and covered walks. Main features of the museum will be:
