Though simple in concept, his de- sign is steeped in symbolism. He en- visages the monument standing in a wide open flat terrain, free of buildings or other structures, giving dramatic ef- fect to its twin, tall stelae which rise from a low, square podium.
The pale arm-like stelae are an ob- vious symbol of reaching for the moon. The height of the monument is 252.71 ft., representing (one foot to 1,000 miles) the greatest distance between the moon and the earth.
Semicircular at the base, the stelae taper gradually to flat slabs at the apex, creating a circular hall only 33 ft. in diameter but 'infinite in height'. Both the inside and outside surfaces of the stelae are finished in a special white cement aggregate, while the podium is paved with light grey, cut limestone. Steps leading to the circular hall and the entire floor of the hall are paved in black, polished limestone.
Podium and stelae form one single structural unit of ferro-concrete con- struction.
The circular hall is reached by a flight of 15 steps, set between a narrow passage, formed by the in-curving edges of the stelae. In the centre of the hall stands a square stone block, about table height, on which are inscribed the
names of those who contributed to man's first landing on the moon. A small quantity of lunar soil would be cast into the centre of the block.
On the two concave walls are bas- reliefs depicting the ancient Chinese legend of Chon Nger's flight to the moon. Two long concrete benches fol- lowing the curve of the walls serve also as light troughs for lighting the bas- reliefs and the interior of the hall.

would change its shape with the inci- dence of light as well as the viewpoint. From the side, as the approach is in- tended, it would look like a single stele. The mass changes as one moves towards its front, taking the dual form at three-quarter view and finally reveal- ing all its symbolism with the front view.
The project is called the Selene Monument, after the Greek goddess of the moon.
