The enactment of the Custodian of Property (Termination of Functions) Ordinance, 1957, has reduced the volume of work in the office of the Custodian of Property to such an extent that it is proposed to delete the Custodian Division from the Treasury estimates. Certain of the continuing expenses of this division are provided for in Treasury subheads and salary is provided for the Assistant Custodian for the period of his pre-retirement leave.
It has been decided to establish a Treasury Inspection and Examination Branch to supervise more thoroughly the accounting operations of departments of Government and to ensure that practices and procedures are efficient and satisfactory. This has necessitated the addition of the following posts:—

4 Stock Verifiers
1 Senior Examiner
3 Examiners
6 Clerks
Four additional clerks are transferred from the Stores Department in accordance with the new policy. The remaining additional posts are necessitated by the increasing volume of work.
Six posts of Senior Accounting Officer are shown under the Treasury although funds are provided in the estimates of the departments in which they are actually serving.
Sixteen posts of Clerk have been deleted from the Treasury Estimates as a result of a decision that clerical staff employed in resettlement estate sub-offices on collection of occupation fees etc., should be under the control of the Commissioner for Resettlement.
Under Special Expenditure a revote of $34,000 is necessary for a cash register ordered in May 1957. Provision is made for one further replacement cash register and for two additional accounting machines necessary to cope with the increasing volume of work.
