Under Other Charges Annually Recurrent the net increase of $158,890 largely results from an additional $48,280 in subhead 2(5) (Rent of offices and/or quarters) for the provision of rented accommodation in Shaws Building for the Headquarters office of the department; an increase of $16,980 in subhead 3 (Casual labour) to allow of more adequate supervision during the summer months on the most popular of the New Territories' beaches; an increase of $50,000 in subhead 4 (Local public works) to provide greater assistance to villagers in the form of grants of cement and other materials to construct dams, wells and footpaths; an additional $11,000 under subhead 7 (Stores and equipment) as a result of the general expansion of the department's activities, and an additional $15,000 in subhead 8(2) (Travelling expenses) necessitated by the increase in staff.
Under Special Expenditure $1,600 and $6,000 are provided for bicycles and scavenging handcarts respectively to allow of replacements and additions for the extension of the scavenging services in the New Territories. Provision of $11,200 is made for four catamarans to be used at beaches in the New Territories and $1,800 is provided for a photograph copying machine so that important land records, plans, maps, etc. can be duplicated quickly and accurately.
