The Assistant Superintendent is required to deal with the increase in security graded work.
The transfer of control of stocks and issues of Paper Stationery from the Stores Department requires the services of an additional Clerk. For the same purpose, 2 Coolies are being transferred from Stores Department.
Foremen, Class I. The growth of the department has called for a redistribution of supervisory duties and has emphasized the necessity for closer coordination between the various sections of the department. While there already exist posts of Foremen Class II for each section it is desired in order to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of work between the sections to have an officer working directly under the control of the Superintendents to assist in ensuring the speedy and steady progress of jobs from section to section in all stages. Such a post is also required so that more time may be devoted by the officers concerned to the training of apprentices.
An increase of 2 Compositors Class I, 2 Pressmen Class I and 8 Bookbinders Class I is partially offset by a decrease of 2 Compositors Class II, 2 Pressmen Class II and 8 Bookbinders Class II. This has been necessitated by higher production and higher technical standards. 8 additional Bookbinders Class II were approved during the financial year and these have been regraded as Workshop Assistants. The salary scales for Pressmen Class II and Bookbinders Class II have now been brought into line with those for Compositors Class II by a small increase in the minimum of the scale.
Lithographers. The present 5 Lithographers have now been regraded as Litho- graphers Class I on their existing salary scale. 4 Pressmen Class II, 1 Apprentice and 1 Retoucher have been regraded as Lithographers Class II, and two new posts of Lithographers Class II have been created. These changes are necessitated by the provision of new and larger equipment; the Lithographers Class I being required to operate the new equipment, 5 Lithographers Class II replacing them on the existing, smaller equipment and 3 Retouchers, graded as Lithographers Class II, being required for work on films and plates of both the new and old equipment.
2 additional Packers are required to deal with the increased volume of deliveries.
The increasing volume of work and increased costs has necessitated an increase in the estimates for Printing Paper and contract Printing and Binding and also for Stores and Equipment.
Stationery, Subhead 3(3), is a new item transferred from Stores Department and provides for the purchase of stationery for issue to all departments of Government.
Under Special Expenditure, $6,500 is a partial revote for a body for a new van and $372,000 has been provided for new equipment to replace old letterpress and bookbinding equipment, and for expanded lithographic printing facilities.
