EXPLANATORY NOTES.
One Temporary Clerk has been added to the staff of the Treasurer's Office to assist in the collection of the Special War Rate.
One Third Grade Clerk has been promoted to Second Grade in the Harbour Master's Department to take the place of the Second Clerk who has proceeded on Active Service. One Fourth Grade Interpreter has been appointed in place of the vacant Third Grade Clerkship.
One Sixth Grade Telephone Clerk has been added to answer calls made after office hours.
Owing to increased work in connection with the issue of permits for the exportation of goods the following additional staff has been added to the Imports and Exports Department:-
6 Fifth Grade Clerks (Temporary).
2 Office Attendants.
A lump sum of $10,000 is included under Imports and Exports Department for the Temporary Staff for the compilation of Trade Statistics. The requirements of the department cannot at present be stated exactly.
One Fifth Grade Computer in the Royal Observatory has been promoted to Fourth Grade without allowance for night duty.
One Second Grade Assistant Interpreter and One Third Grade Clerk and Trans- lator in the Supreme Court, having passed the First Grade Interpreters' Examination, have been promoted to First Grade.
Owing to increase of work in the Attorney General's Office the Second Grade Clerk has been promoted to First Grade.
A grant of $1,500 has been included to clear off the accumulated debt of the Police Reserve Band.
A grant of $150 a month is inserted towards the rent of the Police Reserve Head- quarters.
To replace European Warders in Victoria Gaol, who have been granted leave to proceed on Active Service, two additional Temporary Indian Warders have been appointed.
The vote for Incidental Expenses of the Victoria Gaol has been sub-divided into Incidental Expenses, Cleansing Materials and Washing, Fuel and Furniture. Under Furniture are now debited articles made by prisoners for the Gaol.
In consequence of the retirement of the Superintendent of the Government Civil Hospital the post has been left in abeyance and one additional Medical Officer has been included.
An allowance of $300 is included for X-Ray photographic work performed by the Apothecary of the Civil Hospital.
One Nurse at $900 has been promoted to Staff Nurse at £80 rising to £120 by £20 triennially after 3 years' service.
One Linen Maid at $720 with Lunch Allowance of $180 has been added to assist the Matron in supervising issues of linen.
Owing to the absence of one European Wardmaster, who has been granted leave to proceed on Active Service, one additional Chinese Wardmaster has been included under Lunatic Asylum.
A Personal Allowance of $60 has been granted to the Fifth Grade Interpreter to the Assistant Medical Officer of Health in lieu of promotion to Fourth Grade.
Fourteen Sanitary Inspectors (£165 to £225 by £15 biennially) is the authorised establishment. In the Estimates for 1917 provision was made for the salaries of twelve only; the establishment is now completed by two new appointments.
