An Honorary House Physician and Surgeon having been appointed to the Govern- ment Civil Hospital it was decided to grant them quarters and the sum of $1 per day each has been allowed for board. These gentlemen are from the Hongkong University.
The department having taken over the conservancy work in the City and Hill Districts it has been found necessary to increase the number of coolies employed.
The old steam refuse barge having become unserviceable it is proposed to replace it with a motor lighter.
The extended agreement of the Assistant Engineer appointed for the Harbour of Refuge Works having expired, this officer has been placed on the permanent establish- ment as a Senior Assistant Engineer.-Governor's Despatch No. 359 of the 14th September, 1916.
For carrying out the surveys of villages in the New Territories, hitherto carried out by contract, it has been considered advisable to appoint a Junior Assistant Surveyor at a salary of $1,440 to $1,800 by $120 biennially, with a conveyance allowance of $180 per annum.
Owing to the arrangement in the Public Works Department Stores being unsatis- factory, it was decided to re-organize the staff. This has been done by reducing the numbers employed and improving the salaries of certain posts.
Owing to the difficulty experienced in making payments to the coolies employed in the Public Works Department the services of an Indian constable have been placed at the disposal of the department and an allowance for the extra work involved has been provided.
Provision has been made for mounting plans in the Public Works Department. This has hitherto been done by one of the staff who has been paid for the extra work involved from an open vote. It is considered desirable to make separate provision for this service.
