Ma, Viceroy of Nanking, died of the wounds inflicted by an assassin, 1870. Treaty with Austria signed at Peking, 1869. Arrival of the "Vega" at Yokohama,

after havingdiscovered the North-East Passage, 1879. Terrific fire at Hankow; over 1,000- lives lost, 500 houses, 612 junks, and 2,000 sampans burned, 1887.

Forts in Canton river garrisoned by Chinese troops, 1811.

Attack on the forts at Shimonoseki, Japan, by the allied fleets under Adml. Kuper, 1864 H.M.S. "Zephyr" fired on by Chinesc in Kimpai Pass, 1884. Death of Teo Taung tang at Foochow, 1885.
