NOTES AND QUERIES

ON CHINA AND JAPAN.

IN contemplating the issue of a Monthly Periodical work devoted to Eastern subjects Notes and Queries," has proved so on the plan of that which, under the title of iseful and so popular during a long series of years in Great Britain and America, thə publishers have in view the already large and constantly increasing interest felt in all parts of the civilized world with relation to China, Japan and the adjacent Countries, together with the rapid accession of means of knowledge in various departments of re- earch, which has been the consequence of so large an influx of European residents as has taken place within the last few years. With Peking and Yedo open to travellers and officials, with the whole Empire of China accessible to explorers, and the barriers hitherto so jealously maintained in Japan becoming daily weakened, numbers of new Facts and much curious information is being accumulated in the note-books of individu- als, who would be glad to preserve in type many little particulars, for embodying which jin a form accessible to the public, no means now exist. It is intended that both notes and inquiries received shall be carefully classified and indexed wath minute care; whilst, in the home work which has been adopted as a model, a list of books wanted, or for isposal, relating to China or Japan will be inserted.

The extensive founts both English and foreign of the firm will enable the work to be well printed, and great facilities exist for engraving on wood any ancient text, maps, or other matters deemed worthy of special illustration.

The work will be divided as follow :—

1.-NOTES:-Historical, Geographical, Ethnological, Linguistic, &c., dc. 2.-QUERIES:-(In same order).

3.-REPLIES.

4.—ÅDDENDUM. NOTES ON Books, CataloGUES, &c.

5.-NOTICES TO CORRESPONDETS. LITERARY ADVERTISEMENTS,

The subscription has been fixed at $4 per Annum. It is necessary, in order to avoid misapprehension, to add that no communication, of whatever description, can entitle a contributor, in the case of a publication of this kind, to receive without charge a copy of paper in which it appears. All "Notes" and "Queries" will of course be inserted without charge.
