A COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE OPEN PORTS OF THOSE COUNTRIES, TOGETHER WITH PEKING, YEDO, HONGKONG AND MACAO.

With MAPS of each place described.

This publication is intended to supply a want increasing daily with the growth of European settlements in China and Japan, of direct personal intercourse with those countries, now more and more facilitated by the rapid extension of steam navigation, and of the trade which every year increases in value and national importance. The scope of the work includes detailed descriptions of ¡important sites and monuments, notes on the climate and general topography, fauna, flora, geology and meteorology of each Port and its neighbourhood, with historical untices and minute details respecting the rise and progress and social characteristics of the several foreign settlements. To these particulars are added summaries and statistics of the trade of each open Port, compiled from the most recent official returns, accompanied by descriptive details of the varied branches into which foreign commerce is divided, together with statements res- pecting coinage, currency, and exchange, lines of steam communication, distances, and rates of passage money. Hints and recommendations to travellers, giving full particu. lars of outfit and mode of proceeding to the less frequented settlements, are also included, combined with notes on domestic markets and mode of living,

Those interested in missionary efforts will find statistical details, and information where such have been obtainable, under the head of each port; whilst the appendix contains a list of works published in the English language relating to China and Japan, and a copious index to the entire contents of the volume.
