Dour Battle Of VALLEY TRAINING TIMES

Defences

Services Draw In Kotewall_Cup

O'REGAN SHINËS Goalkeepers had an "off day" at Caroline Hil. yesterday uiternoon when, in a dour bastle of defences rarely witnessed in local competitive football, Royal Navy and the Army drew in the Kotowall Cup charity series, the final whistle sounding with the score-sheet DIENE

HE Major-General A. E. Grasett and Brigadier T. McLeod were pre- sent at the match,

It will be recalled that in the first encounter of the series South China defeated Navy and the re- maining match will be between the Chinese and the Army,

The most outstanding player yesterday Was undoubtedly O'Regan, Navy left full-back, whose strong clearances were a delight to the many spectators while the in- termediate lines of both teams came in for no small measure of praise in steming the respective at- tacks.

WHIRLWIND START Army won the toss and, the match started in wairlwind fashion, with the forwards of shoth teams trying hard to get past the de- fences, and as a result few shots were taken at goal.

In the first half, although Army pressed for the best part, Navy missed a great chance of taking full points when Hawkins and barber, after indulging in a nice movement on the left, gave Bendy a beautiful shot. The latter, in- stead of taking the ball nearer the goalmouth, shot from 35 yards out only to see Bankier safe the only difficult shot of the afternoon.

SECOND HALF.

The second half saw both teams trying hard to take the lead and in a number of occasions Fox and Hossack of the Army, when placed with through passes, failed to get their shots past Giff, Navy custo- dian, as they shot from 30 yards out!

Fox especially was guilty of tying too far back and as a result the Army forwards did not get enough support. Army again pressed for the most part of the second half, and as stated before, O'Regan was

tower of strength, a

clearing strongly, and tack.ing well.

From a free kick taken outside the penalty area, Bright and Hos- sack had a misunderstanding when the former. instead of shooting at goal, passed, to the latter who did not attempt to reach the ball.

The final whistle came with the score blank.
