One-Fifth Of Burma's Trade
In Chinese Hands
About one-fifth of Burma's trade is in the hands of the overseas Chinese, according to the Burma correspondent of the NEW CHINA DAILY NEWS, a Chinese daily in Chungking.
The overseas Chinese in Burma number more than 300,000. Tunnanese were among the earliest settlers in Burma, owing to the propinquity of the Yunnan province to that country. They went there long before steamship days. Next came Fuklenese and Can- tonese.

The Yunnanese dwell mostly in Upper Burma while the Fuklenese and Cantonese predominate in Lower Burma. The former deal rice, cereals, jewelry and precious stones while the latter are mostly Carpenters and miners. Nearly all of Burma's pawnshops, butcheries and wine shops are owned by Chinese.
