The Financial Times" considers the Budget well adjusted and will ob- tain an increasing response from the community who solidly and unitedly pledge all its resources for victory.

"After an over-prolonged · spell scal confusion and uncertainty. the city and nation will welcome the clarity with which the Chan- cellor has endowed his Budget in two essential respects. »

"FIRSTLY, the alterations of the existing tax structure, are as straightforward as they are dras-

tic.

"SECONDLY, the insistence on the necessity of maximum say-- ing and leading to the nation and increasing the proceeds of an in- tensive national effort (exporting Is rightly emphasised) 15 the clearest possible warning that only In that way can much heavier taxation be avoided.”

INFLATION WARNING *.- The Financial News, says "There is only too good reason to con- clude that if this is all the Trea- sury can do by way of emergency financing, we shall certainly have Inflation by the front door."

The Financial News, adds that the Chancellor has only himself to blame if his critics had mistakenly read his first effort as an omen that "he may intend to do more the next time****the time to set about his task in grim earnest was now. Wars are not financed by tomorrows and might have beens.

Taken as a whole the proposats had a good reception. Everyone expected an increase in income tax and there was some relief that the proposal to increase the standard rate to B/8d. was not more.
