Reference to the effect of the closure of China coast ports on British shipping companies, and also to the effect of the rapidly increasing cost of bunker coal on operating costs of steamers in these waters, was niade by Mr. S. T. Wilkinson. chairman of directors of the Douglas Steamship Co., Ltd., in proposing the adoption of the report and accounts for the past year, at the Company's annual general meeting yesterday morn- Ing.

Supporting. Mr. Williamson, who presided, were Mr. R. V. Wilkin- son and Mr. M. H. Turner (mem- bers of the Consulting Committee) and Mr. C. L. Farmer (secretary). Shareholders present were Messrs. T. Ramsay, H. J. Armstrong, N. y. 4. Croucher, C. B. Brown, W. E Kirby. Han Lau Lam, Ping Sun and Capt. W. B. Pater.

CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH In the course of his address, Mr. Williamson said:—

"I regret to say that the "Sagres” as referred to at the last Meeting is stil detained by the Japanese Navy and no legitimate reason has yet been submitted for her deten- tion which action was very ably referred to by Mr. W. E. Kirby at the last Annual Meeting.

A large amount of repair work has been necessary during the year and our vessels are today in very good condition...
