Plan To Seize Stocks

Effective measures for the control of the wool industry in China have been enforced by the Foreign Trade Commission of the Ministry of Finance. ACUTE SHORTAGE OF FAT

15

IN GERMANY: REVIEW OF

R

NAZI FOOD PROBLEMS

re-

AMSTERDAM, Jan. 3 (Reuter)-A comprehensive view of German's food problems is given in the Nieuwe Rotterdamsche from its Berlin correspondent, in which the writer assesses German self-sufficiency in foodstuffs at between seventy and eighty per cent, except for fats, which are fifty per cent.

The deficiency is normally made up by imports. Suf- ficient stocks were accumulated in the last twelve or eigh- teen months.. Nevertheless the fat problem is at a critical point.

SHORTAGE OF TIN

Desperate efforts are being made į Germany proper last year produced to produce fats from coal and beet; only 824,000 tons. these can only be used for technical purposes with a view to releasing edible fats for huraan consump- tion. The possibilities of grape- stones, beech-nuts and horse chest- nuts are being explored.

The meat situation appears very difficult. Rationing is most severe and the effects of foot and mouth disease are being felt.

FODDER FROM RUSSIA By the importation of fodder from Russia it is hoped to increase the number of pigs in Germany.

Sea Ashing is reduced to a minimum.

In addition, the canning industry is suffering a shortage of tin for

cana.

The Polish territories are expect- ed to help to make up the general defcit, particularly in grain, meat and eggs, but Uttle butter can be hoped from them.
