The market was quietly steady. NEW YORK COTTON: January position led the advance under covering by shorts, scarcity of offerings, moderate price-fixing and good foreign demand. Sentiment is generally bullish on the outlook. on the bellef that the tightness in "free supplies" and the firm at- titude of the farmers are likely to warrant higher prices. There were heavy sales of textiles at advanced prices.

NEW YORK RUBBER: The Trade is expecting improving con- suming demand and also increased C.1.1. offerings on advances.

CHICAGO WHEAT: Crop reports from the South-West are un- favourable. Purchases by cash houses and short-covering are stimu- lating the market: A leading grain expert stresses that rainfall of the past week is insufflelent to relieve the situation and that the drought continues to be severe.

NEW YORK HIDES: The market is statistically sound. Specula- tive buying today was large.
