ECONOMY IN TRANSPORT

"Continued from page 9

It is not unusual now to find manufacturing firms entrusting the whole of their road transport under contract, le firms, who make it their sole business and are able to offer considerable variety in the servics, so "that any particular re- quirements may be met. organisations as Transport Ser- vices, Ltd., with their branches all over the country. With arrange- ments so widespread it is possible for return empty journeys to be avoided or at any rate kept down to the minimum and enable trans-- port to be effected at the lowest possible cost.

With regard to the distributive trades, which make use of vehicles of not very great capacity but are kept busy oa short runs, a great deal of success has been achieved in the design of electrical vehicles, ELECTRICAL VEHICLES

It may be recalled that a couple ol years ago several firms of re- pute showed at Eati's Court electric vans suitable for milkmen; bakers, grocers and other tradesmen and business firms making local dell- veries and they were given a favourable reception.

For one thing they were extreme- ly simple to run and to main-. tain. The driver has nothing to cause him anxiety and experience! on the rear during the past year or so has borne that out.

The maintenance of them is also so simple that it could hardly be Improved upon. All that la neces- sary when the vehicle has corn- pleted its round is to run it into Its way in the garage and push a plug in place; automatically the current will be cut off when the batteries have been recharged,

Experience has shown that the scheme is one which is thoroughly practical, and the fact that the charging takes place during the night, when the load on the power stations is lightest, means "that the current can be purchased at a very cheap rate,

THE ADVANTAGES Indeed, the advantages are so patent that many large concerns who have a considerable amount of distribution to do have standard's- ed feets of vehicles, such as those made by Midland Vehicles, Ltd., which have now been on the market for four years and have been supplied to many corpora- tions and other large 11sers of transport both at home and abroad. Very attractive is the scheme of the Battery Traction Co., Ltd., with their electric, which they are able to market at a price which is attractive when compared with that of a petrol vehicle of similar capacity.

The point is that the battery.j does not have to be purchased with... the vehicle but, through an ar- rangement with the power com- · panies, it is paid for over a period of years.
