MAN'S £5000 | PLANES FOR
CHEQUE FOR DEFENCE
Gifts ranging from a cheque for £5000 to a few uncancelled postage stamps-many of them anonymous-are pouring in to the Australian Defence Department from citizens anxious to de an extra bit towards winning the war,
The Minister for Defence (Mr.) Street) sald he wished gratefully to acknowledge the generosity of the glrs, many of whom were un-: able to do physical service.
The £5000 was received from a business man who asked that his name be not disclosed.
Sir Thomas Buckland, who some time ago provided £10,887 as cost of an Avro Anson bomber, has sent a cheque for £200, the cost of 10 anti-submarine bombs.

An Idea of the increasing value of "communications" aircraft may be gained from a survey of some of the journeys undertaken before war began. ΤΟΥ example the Secretary of State for War. Mr. Hore-Bellsha, made a quick visit to Malta and back in un R. A. F. "communications" aircraft, and the Under-Secretary of State for. Air, Captain H. H. Balfour, made a 12- 000-les lightning tour of R. A. F. units in Egypt. Sudan, Kenya, Palestine and Malta in less than a month.
Recently, too, the Government of India acquired two twin-engined low-wing monoplanes for the per- sonal use of the Viceroy: a similar type of aircraft of a different make was owned by the late King Ghaz of Iraq, and another of these planes har been delivered to the Civil Air Board of Australia for special duties.
