CROWD OF TEN THOUSAND SEE S. CHINA "A" BEAT EASTERN: LEE WAITONG'S JUDGMENT
Splendid Goal - Keeping
By Lau Hin - hon

&
A CROWD NUMBERING, IT IS ESTIMATED, NO LESS THAN 10,000, both within and without the Caroline Hill stadium, wit nessed the season's first big senjor League soccer clash yesterday afternoon when the South China "A" entertained Exsterni Athletic Association.
Few expected Eastern to win. but no one who had noticed the younger club's spirited showing this year could have been unpre- pared for a close and exciting tussle. The score, 2-1 in favour of South China, bore out many prophecies.
FAIRLY EVEN PLAY
Play in the first half was fairly even, positions being well guarded by either side, while, opportunities for attack that were open to both were equalled well-spoiled.
South China's experience told In Selected Haiphong XI, also demon. the struggle, but that is not to say strated his attacking powers. that they were bound to be vic-
torious. The change over of their classic W- shaped line of attack, with Lee Wal-tong at the apex and in the lead, to an in- verted W- plan. with Lee at the back and the two insides leading and fed by the. respective wings, Lee Wai-tong indicated that they were not care less of their opponents' abilities.
CLEVER MOVE
נו
This inversion of line was clever move and showed excellent judgment on the part of Lee Wal-
Lal Shuf-wing was very much in the picture after 20 minutes, and more than once looked as though he might then open the score. Lau Hin-hon, however, managed ably to stave off what had developed into a South China offensive.
It remained for Lal Shul-wing. nevertheless, to break the ice, and he did so by using his head to con- well-directed pass from vert a Tang.
Decorated sand bags, covered with artificial grass, and real flowers produce an unusual effect outside a West-end shop.
