Business was small and largely of a professional character with the Trade the principal buyers, absorbing a moderate amount of hedge-selling and nervous liquidation apparently inspired by doubts over the domestic business trend under the impact of the latest serious of European political disturbances. The benefit to be accrued from the recent rains in South-west is doubtful The mar- ket, technically has improved, with a steady undertone. Certificat- ed stock is reported to be less than 10,000 bales, compared with over 100,000 bales at this time last year. Reports from a very reliable source indicating that shippers have already committed themselves to the sale for forward shipment of over 2 million bales of the new crop and the price on the greater part of this has not yet been fix- ed, should not be overlooked.

NEW YORK RUBBER

Prices firmed on buying by the Trade and on foreign and speculative purchases together with good absorption reports from the various manufacturing centres. Report of firmness on for- eign markets was also a helpful factor.

Under the influence of lower foreign markets, prices moved fractionally lower, with generally dull conditions prevailing. There was a partial recovery on Trade buying and on better export de- movement was noted. mand, Hedge-selling against the new crop Weather conditions for harvesting generally are favourable.
