Deputy Speaker's Sharp Rebuke: "Grossly Disorderly"

An outburst by Mr. W. Gallacher, the Communist MP., in the House of Commons on Tuesday evoked a sharp rebuke from the Deputy Speaker.

While Mr. R. J. Boothby (Con.) "was giving a per- sonal explanation to the House in connexion with cer- tain references made to British trading interests in China by Maj.-Gen. Sir Alfred Knox on Monday, Mr. Gallacher exclaimed; “Is it permissible for a bunch of robbers to take up the time of the House? " ·

The Deputy Speaker characterised the remark as grossly" disorderly and when Mr. J. McGovern (LLP) supported Mr. ... Gallacher, the Deputy Speaker insisted that the question raised by "Mr. Gallacher had nothing to do with the matter before the House,

.."Banch of Robbers" Mr. W. Gallacher(Com munist) asked, the Deputy Speaker, "Is it permissible for a bunch of robbers to take up the time of the House?"

The Deputy Speaker said that if be understood Mr. : Gallacher rightly, his remark was grossly disorderly...

Mr. J. McGovern (IL.P.): But it is true. Mr. Gallacher drew the attention of the Deputy Speaker to the fact that. Sir Alfred Knox was a member 'who took the most violent action against British interests in Spain.

The Deputy Speaker said that that had nothing what- ever to do with the matter be- fore the House,

Mr. McGovern: It is a qués- tion of who should get the loot.

The matter then ended..
