Comparison Between

Old And New Order

Season 1926 Was Memorable: Days Of Shank Brothers," Lees, Honda, Eager, Bowker

(By "R.O.Y.")

Spectators and players alike showed their enthusiasm for baseball in no uncertain manner by turning out in fall force at Caroline Hill, last Sunday, only to be disappointed by the tacle- ment weather "which rendered the ground impossible for play. Sitting in the stand, with a faint hope of the weather clearing. was a group of fans who whiled away the time by indulging in a discussion of the standard of play as sten in Hongkong nowa- daya, as compared to that of some ten or 15 years ago.

The oldumers very naturally agreed that the baseball played.. then was of a higher standard and their reminiscences of play- ers and teams made interesting hearing. Probably the most successful years. of Hongkong baseball were 1924, 25, 26 and 1927. when the league had the use of the Hongkong Football Club ground which was then not enclosed by stands.

A grandstand was erected espe-, cially for baseball and, although about twice the size of that "now in use, was always taxed to capa city. In the 1926 season, the lea- gue was composed of South China. Hongkong Baseball Club, Japanese. Recrela, Filipinos and the Volun- tcera.

Saturday was yek, another heel-kicking day for bowlers. the second week in succession it rained during the week-end and- all bowls games (includkag three unfinished matches) had to be postponed. Although the rain held off for a bit after the down- pour at 1 pm. on Saturday, there was every indication. that it would fall again latep and most clubs were wise enough to post- pone their matches.

But two matches in the First Division and one in the Second were begun and had to be abandoned after a few heads hea been played. On the KCC. green,

"A" the K.C.C.-Recreio match was interrupted by rain after five heads had been played when the KC.C. were leading by 15-14. The other two matches were played on the EBG.C. green. These were the K.B,0.C.— Police matches in the First and Second Division,

In both cases the home teams] were down when rain stopped play.
