CO-OPERATIVE INDUSTRY IN INNER CHINA

Where it is impossible to obtain modern machinery and the market has been "denuded of articles of dally use by the breakdown of communications, cooperative tech- nicians are teaching the popula- tion the use of the old handicraft tools of their ancestors, forgotten since the influx of manufactured goods.

TRAINED MINDS... But this is not wholly a return to the past.

Trained minds examine the ancient methods for possibilities of improvement. A few changes, and the sclid tradi- tional loom, or the wooden spin- ning wheel, produces twice, thrice. four times as much as it did in the days of old.

These facts are not, prosaic. They are part of an epic story. People who would otherwise have starved. And their feet and live. Regions that would otherwise be impoverished begin again to pros- per. China's days of trial become for many of her people also days of rebirth and new strength.

From letters from

organ- izers, technicians and work- kers in the field, from the thusiastic reports of eye-witnesses, from the sober figures of statistical sheets of the various headquarters there, emerges the conclusion that is summarised in the primary slogan of the move- ment:
